I was on of the local authors who was interviewed by Karen Elgersma on The Daily Show about their experience of writing and publishing their books. It featured Julie Salisbury and the InspireABook system and included some of the experiences of self-published authors.

This video has some hints and tips for any writers curious about the reality of publishing their own book — you can listen to real people talk about their own real life experience from Vancouver Island and the options available to these writers as they struggled through the process of writing and publishing their books. Check it out…

For anyone interested in becoming an author in 2010, I highly recommend attending one of Julie’s InspireABook workshops:

InspireABook Intensive Weekend

When: January 16th and 17th, 2010
Where: Victoria Executive Center on Fort St. in Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 10am to 4pm with homework assignments on the Saturday.
Full Price: $495
Early Bird Price: $397

At the weekend workshop you will learn:

  • How to get organized, get focused and overcome writers block!
  • How to use “mind-maps” to organize your outline and chapters.
  • How to use the unique InspireABook™ binder system to organize your material.
  • Understand the editing and publishing industry and all the options available to you to get published professionally.
  • How to write a winning book proposal and marketing plan for mainstream publisher submission.
  • How to market your book and get media exposure

And here are some of the testimonials Julie has received:

The structure has given me a starting point and given me a plan for writing in bite size chunks/goals. I found the binder worksheets, mindmaps and group discussions really good.

Julie Salisbury has a way of pulling the book out of your very heart when you don’t even know it’s there. She is the writer’s mid-wife. I have not stopped since Sunday Julie, it’s still very disjointed but it pours.

Moira Gardener, Writer and Entrepreneur

I want to thank you for holding my feet to the fire with your probing and being the catalyst for me to figure out what the book is really about. I don’t think I would have gotten to this stage without you.Writing this book is not only very joyous for me but has raised my awareness to another level. It never seizes to amaze me how the right people always show up in my life at the right time.
Thank you sooo much for being such a big part of this joyous journey.
With much love and gratitude.

Kucki Low, Author “Keep your head in the clouds – South Africa’s first woman airline pilot”

I found Julie and the Inspire A Book program while working out a deal for self publishing a craft book Gem Tree Sculptures. My book was 90% complete at the time or so I thought. Through the course of the Inspire A Book program I learned that there was more to publishing a book than just writing the chapters and putting it together. It was valuable input for a book that I thought was completed.
Julie was able to answer all questions regarding the book publishing process I completely endorse the Inspire A Book program to any aspiring writer or even a seasoned writer.
Thanks Julie for a great program and I’m actually looking forward to writing my second book.

Dana James, Author “Gem Tree Sculptures”

As you can see, this workshop is just as beneficial if your book idea is just in your head or your manuscript is complete and you need help transforming it into a published book!

It’s videos like this that give the rest of the world the most amazing impressions of Canadians … perhaps not quite an accurate portrayal of all of us, but a really cool one anyway — (emphasis on COOL).

To the Canucks that made this video …

YOU ROCK!

winking  Boo-ya!

I made a little Christmas video because this time of year for everyone can be stressful for everyone … tempers run high and patience can run short — a perfect storm for verbal abuse in an endless number of family and shopping situations.

Here’s a poem parody of “A Visit from St. Nicholas” which was written by Mary C. Ginn … I think she really helps put things in perspective…

winking  … oh, and BTW, you can blame Jodie for the “blooper” reel at the end…

Merry Ho Ho y’all!

Do you know how to tell that guy in the store who keeps acting like a royal pain in the arse to — as we say in Canada — “Take off, eh!” … Well, I do –

Hey y’all … I just came across a blog post from Viv Craske (the King of Confidence) about Richard Bandler’s Xmas Message — something everyone should see if they’ve had a less than excellent year.

For those of you who don’t know who Richard Bandler is … well … he’s not that easy to describe, but I can tell you he’s one of the founders of NLP and he’s a really, really, really amazing and smart guy! — so I highly recommend that you should take a listen to his best wishes video about 2010!

Okay … I was recently sent the link to a post on the Mental Floss Blog called The rebirth of the book? and it showed a little You Tube video about new develops that are being worked on about finding way to incorporate iphone in books! I love the idea! I’ve posted a copy of the video below — and as I watched it, all I could picture was my new verbal self defense book where the book would be a stand-alone version giving the reader the information, but with the iphone in place they could see video demonstrations or a interactive flash game where they could test their skills as they’re learning them!

big grin Boo-ya baby!

BTW, for anyone who is more interested in searching Google for more of this stuff, it’s called Transmedia Storytelling … which is defined by Wikipedia as storytelling across multiple forms of media with each element making distinctive contributions to a viewer/user/player’s understanding of the story. Awwwwwwwwwwwesome!

For those of you who don’t know what Rickrolling is … here is the definition from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Rickrolling is an Internet meme typically involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up”. The meme is a bait and switch: a person provides a web link that they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The URL can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true destination of the link without clicking. When a person clicks on the link and is led to the web page, he or she is said to have been “Rickrolled”. The song may have been favored for this use by those regarding it as the worst popular song of all time. Rickrolling has extended beyond Web links to playing the video or song disruptively in other situations, including public places; this culminated when Astley and the song made a surprise appearance in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a televised event with tens of millions of viewers.

Lately I’ve been really battling the odds with my business — I’ve been putting so much of my time to trying to get my book published and create new material for future courses (none of which will bring a return until next year) while still doing all the other stuff to keep putting food on the table … (*yeesh!*) … let’s just say it’s put me behind the eight-ball …

… and yet, I think of the old saying, You don’t fail until you stop trying.

So … in response to Dean Hunt’s recent blog post I, Would Rather Get Kicked In the Testicles Than Read Your Content, I’d have to say I’ll be more likely to Rickroll my clients and followers before I give up on my passion of teaching NLP! … that’s not to say it’d be a bad thing — the kind of people who think Rickrolling is funny are the type of students and JV partners I’m looking for.

big grin  Boo-ya beh-beh!

However … I’d be more likely to Rickroll you with the Muppets version …

… or — for the the younger crowd — the Sack Astley, Little Big Planet version …

 OMFG! I just finished watching a TV show that a friend taped for me that used NLP in the storyline … and wow, I don’t think they could have made us look any worse.

I’ve been proud to be a part of the field of NLP since I started a decade ago and I’ve known thousands of people who have been helped by NLP coaches and counselors — and yet, TV can take a few small pieces and put together a story casting my chosen career into the pile with serial killers and super-villians. My only question is: do people really believe that cr@p?

(For those of you who can’t tell I’m extremely angry! — *Grrrr*)

As an NLPer I’m taught to accept that other people have a right to their own model of the world, and to respect their beliefs if they work for that person as long (as they’re not hurting anyone) … but, right now … that is really tough to do. At this point in time, in my model of the world I picture the writers of that show … well, let’s just say I don’t imagine them in a very nice way.

 Oh well … I’m told that I need to learn how to take these kinds of things in stride. They say that there are “internet trolls” and “social media douchebags” who’s sole purpose is to go around insulting other people and what they do. The risk is that the more famous you become the more you need to learn how to accept critical feedback from people like that who just want to bring you down, politely thank them for their opinion, and then chalk the experience up to ‘just one more idiot’ and toss the experience behind you …

… and so, to all the people who really believe NLP is a cult, a scam or evil — thank you for your consideration, and please consider yourself tossed.

 Boo-ya!
